Could somebody tell me if the author of hermes has gotten smart and allowed externals to co-exist with the BBS? He's got an external loading format (you load a code resource into the BBS application itself), but that's functionally useless when you've got a game that is over 200K standalone. Hypercard makes it very easy to handle complicated data structures and do text handling. I doubt there's much of a Market though. If not then they could be added. David - By having a) very limited "hatch" sites, b) only leaving the original packages on the BBS (don't unpack, add a sales blurb for your BBS, and repackage it), and c) on the DOS side, you can get security verification. AT the moment, Michael Bean is preparing a new release of the AMUG "BBS In a Box" CD-ROM and he had I have been discussing this same issue. Since he's got a cut-off date of Aug. 15, I doubt that he can take advantage of the format you're proposing (since it needs to get argued out here first!). For the moment, he's planning on using resources of type SitC=0 to contain a text description of the file. SitC was defined by Ray Lau/Aladdin for StuffIt comments: it's a text resource which can contain up to 32K. Since it's non BBS-specific, it's a reasonable alternative, though I'd like to see agreement on a structured resource type. If there is general interest in this, I'd be glad to work up a proposed resource structure. The big problem is access by non-Mac OS computers -- resource forks don't exist elsewhere. That causes a problem (at least here). Zip Extract calls ArcMail Extract automatically. By adding it to the string you now have it called twice. This results in a -49 error (file already open with write permission). I have left the ArcMail call out of the string because of this, and things 'seem' to be running OK (or am I looking for trouble down the road?). 2 - The password parameter in the NODE statement appears to be required. When initially setting up I left it out for those nodes of mine not using passwords, and the statement failed (it took the 'R' parameter as the password, and then could not find the optional flag). I then inserted a made-up password for those nodes, and the files are being sent. Obviously this password is not the same as the session password for a given node, because I made up passwords for them as well. What the heck is it?? 3 - So far I am receiving files (NODEDIFF, FIDONET.NA, and FNEWS) only from my EC, who is running Bink. No problem there, they all get put into the proper areas on arrival. Also, they all go out to the designated nodes as scheduled, _except_ for the one node I have who is running Bink (all others are Tabby). He gets his mail fine, but the Tic stuff fails with an error and does not get sent. Thoughts? 4 - The AREADESCRIPTION statement fails. From talking to other sysops, I've heard that they often have problems FREQing from 13/13. Could you perhaps put the new version of RAID up for FREQ on your system? A couple of them (just click for one) doesn't seem behave propoerly and i've had a couple of crashes. My advise is to be very carefull with a new toy and log all problems you have, then uplaod warmings to your BBS's so that a full history of new stuff can be available to others.
